Kind Eyes - Nicky Egan

After a weekend break, we’re back with more hits to start off your Monday morning.

This track comes to you from Nicky Egan off of her album Good People, a funky fusion of r&b and rock that you can buy here. I like this song a lot. If you’re into jazzy, off-beat jams, definitely listen to her and her band of 5 on this track. Her voice is ridiculous.

On a side note, for those of you who missed the Hoodie show Friday, it was an absolute blast. If you happen to live in one of the other cities on the tour, this is an absolute, can’t miss opportunity.

Happy Monday!

Hoodie Allen

—Joy & Misery

Whattup Marina!!

Taking a break from Data Sufficiency (you’re better off not knowing what that means) and making a quick reminder for everyone to BUY YOUR TICKETS TO HOODIE ALLEN for this Friday night in AA.  If you’re not going to be around…sucks. The show’s going to feature Zak!, an up and coming rapper, along with a handful of other dj’s/rappers in the downtown venue.

This is Joy & Misery from Hoodie’s debut mixtape, Pep Rally. To me this is one of his hidden gems. You Are Not A Robot, January Jones, Look At What We Started, those are all obvious jams.  Joy & Misery does a great job of sampling Cold War Kids’ Hospital Beds into a reflective song, looking back at the places Hoodie’s been and where he’ll be going in the future.

If you can’t make it this Friday, but live in another city that supports and appreciates good music, check out Hoodie’s tour dates below:

Saul Kurtz

—Just Fine

Just Fine - Saul Kurtz

Happy Friday my tumblerses and tweeples.  Just Fine comes to you from Saul Kurtz’s 2nd album? ep? lp? These terms confuse me. It comes from his second work of 2010, Precious Time, a fuller and more matured sounding album after his more acoustic A Conspiring Universe, also from 2010.  The two different albums have a much different sound, but I think this song really displays how far his music has come in the past couple of years. I am telling you, he is going to be big. Like, in a couple of months legitimate blogs with legitimate followings will be posting this stuff.

This is ride-in-your-car-on-a-sunday music, something to sit back to and enjoy.  His voice is amazing, and his style reminds me a lot of John Mayer, who he even mentions in his twitter bio; “I’m a singer/songwriter, I’m like John Mayer, but half as good, and twice as cute!” haha.

More info on Saul:

He hails from my hometown in New York, goes to Union College, and he is a homie. Buy both of his albums on iTunes before you’ll have to hop on the bandwagon.

His website is http://saulkurtz.com/, you can download Just Fine on the front page (fo FREE!) by entering your email.

Dream’s Up  - Hoodie Allen

Fresh off the press! New Hoodie Allen, releasing new stuff for the first time since his mixtape Pep Rally this past fall.  The tape proved Hoodie’s got a lot of potential, and honestly I could say I liked every song on Pep Rally, which is saying a lot for a debut.  Dream’s Up shows the dynamism of this man’s flow.

Hoodie’s gone far and he’s getting some notice.  Early this month he was listed #23 on Billboard’s “Next Big Sound 25” charts, with Yelle and Diggy Simmons rounding up the top of the list.

If you’re in Ann Arbor, check out Hoodie’s show here Friday, February 4th at Vintage.  You can buy your tickets here

Helena Beat - Foster The People

If you’ve heard of Foster The People, you’re probably anxiously awaiting their newest stuff.  Last year, the LA-based band released “Pumped Up Kicks”, an instant hit and catchy jam.  They sound like a chilled-out version of Empire of the Sun, and their upcoming tour will hit Australia in feb after a brief trip through California.
The guys don’t have too much out yet, they formed as a group only in late 09 so they’re still in their early stages. Anyway, check out the song, I think their sound has a lot of potential and I really like this song, possibly more than any other I’ve posted on here.

G Koop & O-man #7 feat Marc Stretch & Dave Richards “Pit Boss”

This video is brought to you by Oakland-based producers G Koop & O-man, with the help of rapper Marc Stretch. It’s one of a series of YouTube videos, Each episode features a new composition, recorded from start to finish and edited instrument by instrument so the creative process is shown step by step.

First they bring in the drum pattern, pianos, brass instruments, throw in some guitar and organs, and bring it all together at the end, with Marc Stretch rapping over it all.

Very cool stuff, this video has been the most popular of the series, and lets you into the world of beat producing not often shown.  It gave me a newfound respect for the producers in the background, and makes me wanna give less credit to the rapper, who only comes in at the end to work on the final product.

That’s it for today. I think I’ll start to do a sign off with a song that’s been shuffling through my playlists…so for today:

Ex.fm

I figured this wouldn’t be a “traditional” post but I felt that I needed to share this with the tumblrverse.

There’s a new site out there that is going to be the solution to any music-explorer/finder/fan’s problems. That site is Ex.fm. According to its creators, with Ex.fm “The web is now your music library”. And, as I suspect the few people that read this blog are interested in discovering music, this site has the potential to help you out a TON.

Ex.fm has a number of different capabilities.

First off, its a Google Chrome extension. Once installed, it will notify you if a site (very much like this site) has music files. If so, it automatically downloads them to your library, and allows you to “Note” them as a favorite.

The site’s organizational features are also a HUGE plus. It puts your music files in an itunes-like screen where you can sort by artist, album, and also by blog. The last one is super important, so I bolded it. yep.

Looking to create a little following on ex.fm? On your personalized page, (like twitter), you can view which users you follow, who follows you, along with your noted songs. As an example:

ex.fm

I haven’t fully tested it out yet, but the program also has access to facebook, twitter, and tumblr (this very own blog….ahh!), making it really easy to share your music discoveries across platforms.

And judging by its tiny web presence and huge potential, not to mention different features, I really want to say that this might truly represent the future of music discovery on the web. It’s social, great design, and very accessible. The only potential downside? Copyright/legal issues, maybe? I’m not a lawyer. Anyway…

By now I’ve probably bored you with the details.

Try out ex.fm and click on the 60 second orientation video. It’ll explain everything in detail.

Many thanks to the Gr8 one, for without him this blog post would not be possible.

The Tallest Man On Earth

—The Wild Hunt

The Wild Hunt - The Tallest Man On Earth

Happy New Year!

I really like this song. The Tallest Man On Earth is the stage name of Swedish folk singer/songwriter Kristian Matsson.  He played in the band Montezumas until 2007, when he released his self-titled debut album. Since then, he’s released Shallow Grave (2008), and The Wild Hunt (2010).  Essentially he’s just a dude and his guitar, but there’s a lot more to him than just that. With an extremely powerful voice and deep lyrics, it’s quite obvious Matsson’s very talented.

If you like what you hear, check out “King of Spain” and “You’re Going Back” from the same album.

Here’s an excerpt from his bio. Who knows?

I am The Tallest Man on Earth. so tall I have a feeling that my funeral will be expensive, they’ll have to saw my body in half and put the two parts in separate graves. I guess some people will mourn the top part, some the bottom.

Turns out he’s only 5’5”. Bummer.

Happy Sunday,

T.I.

—All She Wrote ft. Eminem

All She Wrote

All She Wrote - T.I. ft. Eminem

The beat to this song is incredible, Eminem’s verse ridiculous, I don’t know how many other superlatives and crazy adjectives I would need to drop on you for you to understand the power of this song.

Eminem’s gone from that little kid that would fuck with you and curse and do silly shit just to prove himself, to that crotchety old man with a shotgun yelling at you to get off his fucking porch.  Of course they’re two completely different voices, but I like both of em just the same.

Buy you a bag of fritos, I wouldn’t let you eat the fucking chip on my shoulder

and

If you was bleach and I was hair I wouldn’t die for ya

Top 50 and other features up next. Smell ya later
